The questions that come up

Repair & Maintenance
What exactly gets looked at during the inspection?
The whole system, not just the opener. Sections, hinges, rollers, tracks and their fasteners; springs, cables, drums and bottom brackets; the bottom seal and perimeter weatherstrip; the opener head, rail, arm and mounting; the photo eyes, contact reversal, wall control, remotes, keypad and manual release; and the warning labels. Each is examined, and the door is tested both by hand and under power. Garage Door Safety Inspection
How do I test the safety reversal at home?
Two tests, once a month. With the door open, press close and wave a broom handle through the photo-eye beam near the floor: the door should stop and go back up. Next, set a 2x4 flat on the concrete in the middle of the opening and press close: the door must reverse when it meets the board. If it stops on the board without reversing, the down travel or force setting needs adjustment, and if it fails after that, book a visit. Garage Door Tune-Up
One side of my door hangs lower than the other. What does that mean?
A door that sits tilted almost always has a lifting cable that has gone slack, unwound from its drum or broken on the low side. The springs are still pulling on the other side, which is why the door racks and the rollers escape. Leave it where it is; levelling it means handling the springs and rewinding both cables evenly, which is done with the door clamped and the tension controlled. Off-Track Garage Door Reset
What happens to the opener during the work?
It is disconnected at the release cord and unplugged before any hardware comes off, so the motor cannot pull on a door that is missing a section. After the new section is in and the door has been balanced by hand, the opener is reconnected and tested: its reversal against a board on the floor and its photo-eyes are checked every time, and the open and close limits or the force setting are reset only if that check shows they need it. Springs & Hardware
I lubricated everything and the grinding came back. Why?
Lubricant restores bearings and hinges that are still sound; it has nothing to offer a wheel worn oval, a nylon tire that has cracked, or bearings whose balls have pitted their race. When a spray settles the noise for a day or two and it returns, the wear is in the roller itself and replacement is the answer. Spray on the track or a plastic wheel can make matters worse by collecting grit, so the technician cleans that off as part of the job. Garage Door Roller Replacement
Can I keep using the door until the hinge is replaced?
It is better to leave the door closed and use another way in and out. A joint with a failed hinge flexes more on every trip, which strains the neighbouring hinges, can pull a roller out of the track and can crease the panel itself. If the door is already open or stuck partway, leave it where it is rather than running the opener again. A closed, still door is what the technician hopes to find. Garage Door Hinge Replacement
The wood behind the track is rotten. Can the track still be fixed?
Yes, and the wood is part of the job. Screws will not hold in soft timber, so the technician cuts back to solid wood and sisters a new length of jamb alongside or replaces the lower section, fastening it through to the framing. The brackets are then lag-screwed into the fresh wood and the track set to the door. In older garages this repair is common, and it is what makes the alignment last. What makes a cable fray?
Fraying is individual wires breaking, and it comes from two things: bending fatigue where the cable wraps the drum or pulley, and rubbing where it touches something it should not, such as a bent track edge, a rough drum groove, a seized pulley or a bracket sitting crooked after a bump. Corrosion speeds both. The technician looks for the rough edge so the new cable does not meet it. Garage Door Cable Replacement

How old is too old to repair?
Age alone is not the test; parts and safety are. The technician checks the exact model and part numbers, because even a unit from the last two decades can have a board, sensor or trolley that is no longer made. Where the parts are available, a repair is usually straightforward. Where a key part is discontinued with nothing to replace it, or the unit predates photo eyes, replacement is the sounder choice even for a small fault. The technician tells you which side of that line your unit sits on. Garage Door Opener Diagnosis and Repair
What should I check before calling?
With the door closed, pull the red handle and try lifting the door by hand; note whether it is heavy or stays up on its own. Look at the chain for slack, rust or a broken link, and at the head for pale shavings. Note whether the motor runs at all, whether the door stops short or reverses, and where the trolley sits on the rail. The model on the head's label and a photo of the rail help too. Chain-Drive Opener Repair
Will my remotes and keypad still work afterwards?
Yes. Belt, trolley and pulley work happens on the rail and leaves the operator's memory untouched. Replacing the gear at the motor head means opening the head unit, and on some models that is a good moment to confirm every remote, the keypad and any in-car buttons afterwards. The technician tests each before leaving and re-teaches any that need it. Belt-Drive Opener Repair
Is battery backup worth having?
For many households it is the feature they value most, especially where ice storms and winter outages are part of life. A backup battery inside or beside the head unit runs the door for a number of cycles when the power is off, so you can get the car out or put it away without heaving the door up by hand in the dark. The head unit chirps or lights an indicator when the battery needs renewing, which is every few years. Garage Door Opener Replacement

Installation & Upgrades
Can replacement work with a low ceiling?
Often, provided the opening and overhead space are measured before ordering. Low-headroom track and other model-supported arrangements can change how the upper section moves through the curve and where counterbalance parts sit. The technician maps beams, pipes and the operator rail, then selects from configurations supported for the particular door. Sectional Garage Door Replacement
Why are new springs selected for the replacement door?
Counterbalance springs are chosen around the completed door's weight, height, track arrangement and intended travel. Insulation, steel skins, windows and reinforcement all contribute to that load. A spring combination from a different assembly may provide unsuitable torque even when it physically fits. Matching the counterbalance to the ordered door supports manageable manual movement and orderly cable travel. Insulated Steel Garage Door Installation
Can my existing garage door opener stay?
That depends on its condition, compatibility, rail geometry, mounting, and ability to operate the balanced replacement. The opener is assessed after the new door weight and reinforcement arrangement are known. If it remains suitable, it is connected through the specified operator bracket, then its limits, force settings, sensors, manual release, and reversal response are reset and tested. Wind-Rated Garage Door Replacement
Will my current garage door opener stay in place?
That depends on its supported door size and weight, rail arrangement, condition, controls and safety features. The assessment compares its product information with the selected door and checks whether the attachment can be reinforced correctly. When it remains, travel and force are reset for the new balanced assembly. Any opener change is identified separately in the planned scope. Carriage-House Garage Door Installation
