- The call
- On the old wood door, one hinge has pulled away from the panel, dragging a screw and a chunk of soft timber with it. The panel sags slightly at that joint and the door bumps at the curve instead of gliding.

With the door closed and a flashlight on the inside face, one of the hinges near the edge has a crack running from the screw hole to the knuckle. The steel around it is brown with rust, and the pin looks loose in its barrel.
A hinge visit runs in a settled order. The opener is disconnected and the door is left closed, because with the panels stacked on one another and the bottom resting on the floor, the hinges are carrying very little. The technician looks at every hinge on every joint and checks the rollers and the screw holes at the same time. Worn hinges are then changed one at a time so the door is never without a joint, each new part matching the number and gauge of the old. Then the door is run by hand, checked for a flush fit and balance, and the opener is reconnected and tested.

Garage Door Hinge Replacement · Vaughan

Scene 1
Each edge hinge cradles a roller stem, and the two wear together. The technician spins every wheel, looks for cracked or flat-spotted tires, checks that the stem has the right length for the hinge it sits in and that the bearing turns without grinding. A roller that has seized drags at the hinge on every trip, and a stem that is too short lets the wheel wander out of the track and twist the hinge. Where rollers are worn, changing them while the hinge is off costs a few minutes and stops the new hinge inheriting the strain that finished the old one.
Scene 2
A centre hinge carries no roller, so its exchange is the simplest part of the day. The screws into the upper and lower panels are backed out, the old hinge lifted off, and the stile checked for damage around the holes. The new hinge, a 1 in most cases since centre hinges share that geometry, is placed on the same hole pattern, and new hex-head self-drilling screws are driven into the stile or the support plate behind it. If the old holes are tired, the technician moves the hinge slightly to fresh metal within the stile or bolts through with a nut and washer, then confirms the joint closes tight with no gap.
Scene 3
Before leaving, the technician tells you which hinges were replaced, their numbers and gauge, whether rollers or backer plates went on, and anything corrected along the way such as a wrong-numbered hinge or a loose track bracket. Write it inside the door manual or on a card near the opener, along with the door's make and panel count. Hinge widths and hole patterns vary between manufacturers, so the next technician, or you at the parts counter, can match parts without measuring from scratch. If some hinges were left in place as sound, their condition goes on the same note so you know what to watch.

It is better to leave the door closed and use another way in and out. A joint with a failed hinge flexes more on every trip, which strains the neighbouring hinges, can pull a roller out of the track and can crease the panel itself. If the door is already open or stuck partway, leave it where it is rather than running the opener again. A closed, still door is what the technician hopes to find.
Often noticeably. A cracked or loose hinge is the source of many pops, clicks and rattles, and a hinge that holds its roller square lets the wheel run flat instead of scraping the track lip. Combined with fresh lubricant on the knuckles and rollers, the door settles into a steady rumble. Any noise that remains usually points to the rollers, the opener chain or the springs, which the technician can identify for you.
Whether the door is closed, open or stuck; where the noise or the gap appears and roughly how high; whether you can see a cracked, bent or loose hinge and whether it is at the edge or the middle; whether the door is a single or a double, steel or wood, and how many panels it has; and whether anything hit the door lately. A photo of the hinge and its stamped number is useful.
