- The call
- The new door went in last year and looks perfect, but the old wooden stop and its tired seal were left in place. Along the top there is a gap you could slide a finger into, and the cold pours through it.

A length of weatherstrip along the right jamb has pulled away, nails and all, and it slaps against the trim every time the wind picks up. The wood behind it is dark and soft where it meets the floor.
For an attached garage the perimeter seal does more than keep leaves out. The garage is a buffer between the weather and the house, and drafts around the door cool the wall it shares with the kitchen and the floor of the room above it. Snow blown in melts and refreezes on the slab, and mice follow the warm air in at open corners. A well-fitted side and header seal closes those paths and eases the job of the weatherstripped door between garage and house, though the garage's warmth also depends on the door's own seal, the ceiling and the heating. It is a worthwhile comfort improvement for the house.

Scene 1
Gaps like to live where pieces meet. The technician looks at both top corners, where the header seal and the side seals should overlap so there is no square hole, and at both bottom corners, where the side seal should run right down to meet the bottom seal on the door. Mouse droppings, leaves and a small drift of snow in one corner are common finds and point to exactly which joint has opened. The bottom seal itself is noted; it is a separate part of the door, but if it is flattened or torn the household is told so both can be renewed in one visit if they wish.
Scene 2
Each side length is cut to run from tight under the header piece down to the floor, with a little spare to trim in place. It is set with the same light contact as the header and fastened top to bottom. At the top corner, the side fin tucks under the header fin so they overlap, leaving no square hole for drafts or mice. At the floor the side is trimmed to meet the bottom seal on the door, so the seal is continuous around three sides and hands off to the fourth. Both sides are done the same way, checking the door edge gap as they go.
Scene 3
The seal was set against the door as it sits today. If the door is later adjusted, has its springs or rollers replaced, or is swapped for a new one, the contact can change: a door that now sits a few millimetres further out presses the fin harder, and one that sits further in leaves a gap. After any such work, do the daylight test again and ask the technician doing that job to check the perimeter seal while they are there. Re-setting a length is a small task and keeps the two parts of the system working together.

It can help. Drafts around the garage door cool the garage, and the garage cools the floor above it and the wall it shares with the house. Closing the perimeter cuts those drafts, though how much warmer the garage runs depends on the door's own seal, the ceiling insulation and how the space is heated, not the perimeter alone. A technician can talk through those as separate steps if the room stays cold.
If the wood stop is sound, straight and not buried in paint, a new fin nailed to its face is the simpler choice and keeps the look of the trim. If the stop is cracked, soft or has been painted many times, a one-piece vinyl stop replaces it entirely, needs no paint and cannot rot. The technician checks the stop and recommends one or the other on site.
The fin is meant to bend against the door with a small, even deflection. That is enough to seal, and it lets the fin spring clear as the door lifts. Pressed hard, it drags on the door face, folds under on the way down, squeals and wears through well before its time, and it adds load to the opener. Set too far off, it leaves a standing gap. The light touch is the setting that lasts.
